The European Championship in Tirana has concluded with a historic achievement for Azerbaijan.
Following the Greco-Roman team’s success, the freestyle wrestling team also conquered Europe. Securing 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals, the team earned 152 points and was crowned European champion for the sixth time, finishing well ahead of Georgia by 58 points. Armenia came third with 73 points.
Earlier, Azerbaijan dominated this discipline in 2009, 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2025.
In Albania, the national team delivered its best result in 17 years based on medal quality. The haul of 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals is the country’s top freestyle wrestling performance at the European Championships since 2009.
At the championships in Tirana, Islam Bazarganov (57kg), Ali Tsokayev (92kg), and Giorgi Meshvildishvili (125kg) were crowned European champions. Turan Bayramov (74 kg) and Arsenii Dzhioev (86kg) secured silver medals, while Jabrayil Hajiyev (79kg) earned bronze.
This success sealed a remarkable golden double for Azerbaijan, which, as in 2022 and 2025, dominated the team standings in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.
