Former Inter, Lazio, Sampdoria and Italy star Antonio Candreva has announced his retirement from football at the age of 38, according to Football Italia.

The attacking midfielder celebrated his 38th birthday last month and had been out of contract since his deal with Salernitana expired in July 2024.

He announced the news with a video message on his social media accounts.

“Dear football, today is one of the most important days of my life. The time has come to say goodbye. Here, at San Siro, the temple of football, where I played my last match.

“My journey with you began here 30 years ago, filled with joy and pain, sacrifice and victory, and for sure, so many emotions.

“I’ve lived my dream, my passion. I don’t see this as a farewell, but just a new starting point. Thank you, football, see you soon.”

Famous for scoring spectacular goals throughout his career, Candreva found the net 85 times with 100 assists in 502 Serie A appearances.

The well-travelled player represented the likes of Udinese, Juventus, Lazio, Inter and Sampdoria.

He also put together 54 senior caps for Italy, scoring seven goals and assisting another 13 for his teammates.

However, the only silverware of his playing career was the 2012-13 Coppa Italia with Lazio.
