The Azerbaijan men’s and women's chess players are testing their strength at the FIDE Grand Swiss and Women’s Grand Swiss 2023 held in Douglas, Isle of Man, UK.
Azerbaijani men’s squad includes Rauf Mammadov, Vasif Durarbayli, Nijat Suleymanli and Nijat Abasov, while Ulviyya Fataliyeva, Govhar Beydullayeva and Gunay Mammadzade will compete in women’s competition.
Both tournaments will have record-breaking prize funds. In the open section the prize fund is $460,000 while in the women section it amounts to $140,000.
The Grand Swiss is a pivotal part of the FIDE World Championship cycle, which attracts players from all over the world, giving them a chance to qualify for the Candidates Tournament.
The 11-round Swiss tournament will run until November 6.
