At least one person was killed and 30 others were still trapped in a mine that collapsed in central Nigeria's Niger State, a local rescue agency said on Tuesday, according to Xinhua.

Six people were rescued after Monday's incident in the Galkogo village of Shiroro local government area, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, head of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, told reporters Tuesday morning.

The effect of heavy rains on the ground on Monday was the cause of the mine collapse, Baba-Arah said, noting that rescuers ran for safety during the rescue operation at the site "because it kept falling."

He added that excavators were later deployed to the site to complete the rescue operation.
